As we come to the close of the year, we reach the end of our 45th year in hospitality
In the first three parts of our Director Spotlight series, we’ve chatted with Brandi Biller, Shanna Smith, and Dinora Torres. Finishing off the series and the year, we have our fourth and final Director Spotlight on our Director Kathy Burgess.
Our project directors are vital to the success of our teams, and they are often managing several teams working on different projects. In our final installment, we are featuring our fourth Project Director, Kathy Burgess. Kathy has been with Beyer Brown for almost 6 years, and in that time has led teams to many successful project completions. Her brand experience includes Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Hilton, Kimpton, and Boutique projects.
Here is what Kathy had to say about working in the hospitality industry, and a little more about her role.
How long have you been working with Beyer Brown?
I have been with Beyer Brown for a total of around 6 years.
How has your career grown since starting at the company?
I started as an Assistant Project Manager, and moved up to Director where I get the privilege to work alongside some amazing people.
Can you tell us a few details about the favorite part of your job?
So many things! I love collaborating with all stakeholders on the project. It takes clear communication and teamwork across the board to bring hotels to life. I love building and maintaining relationships. I love cultivating my team and watching them grow into strong project managers.
Do you have a story you are able to share? Maybe a time when your FF&E expertise helped save a project, or a funny or inspirational story?
Not just me, but our whole team takes time on the front end of each project to cross reference tagged plans against the FF&E matrix to confirm counts. It has proven to be a valuable service as we do sometimes find discrepancies that if not caught could leave the hotel short product at time of install.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me may include collaborating and strategizing with my team, conference calls and meetings, and reviewing documentations and reports.
What’s unique about working for Beyer Brown?
Our ability to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions is one of the things that sets us apart.
What is your favorite part about working in hospitality?
With every project I’m in awe of how a specification book gets transformed into product that then comes together to create a beautiful hotel.
What skill do you think everyone should learn?
Compassionate candor.
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Be patient.
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to find out?
I was born right-handed but had to switch to being a lefty in the 2nd grade due to a burn. Once the burn healed, I never switched back.
What, if anything, are you currently binge-watching?
Currently binge-watching Hell’s Kitchen. Who doesn’t love an angry Gordon Ramsay?
